This may be the reason behind his success. 
Beginning his career in july 1998 at Gstaad ATP tour, he played Davis cup for Switzerland in 1999 and finished the year as youngest player at Top 100 in ATP rankings.   

In 2000 he reached the semi finals in Sydney Olympics, but lost the bronze medal to France. Then he failed to make impression in Grand Slams and he lost his first final to Marc Rosset in Marseille. He finished the year at 29 in the ATP ranking.

In 2001 Federer won his first final at the Milan Open and then won Davis cup matches against US. His turning point being the quaterfinal win over Pete Sampras at Wimbledon. He finished the year at No.13
In 2002 Roger suffered a major set back by losing his Australian coach and mentor "Peter Carter". He reached his first ATP masters series in Miami but lost to "Andre Agassi". He was out from the Grand Slams at early rounds, but he qualified for the Masters cup. He lost it to the then No.1 Lyetton Hewitt in the semifinals. Despite, he managed to reach No.6.

In 2003 he challenged the open era men's tennis. He won his first Grand slam title at Wimbledon, but lost other slams and reached No.2 ranking behind the American " Andy Roddick".

Finally he reached No.1 by the Australian Open title in 2004 defeating Roddick a record which he has kept ever since.
